How to choose reed strength Generally speaking, reeds are numbered from 1 to 5. the higher the number, the thicker the reed. Student players usually start with a size 2 or 2 1/2 because they are easier to play through yet provide enough control for proper intonation. Professional players usually use a size 3 or higher because they provide more expressive control but are more difficult use for average player due to the stiffness of the reed.
Most band directors can correctly recommend proper reed size after an evaluation of the player's level of skill.
